The Game of Soccer – What to Know Before Your Soccer Party or Event

In soccer, the rules require there are 11 players per team: 10 players on the field and 1 goalkeeper. There are 2 parts of the game of soccer, each one lasting 45 minutes. The referee may add more playing time based on time being wasted or the number of plays being stopped during the game. The game uses a soccer ball and players can only use their feet, legs, shoulders, and head to touch the ball (no hands or arms), except for the goalkeeper who may use their hands within their penalty area.

Each soccer team scores by kicking the ball into the opposing team’s goal. Players work together by dribbling and passing to each other to move the soccer ball down the field to score in the other team’s goal. There are players who focus on offensive “shooting” (scoring goals), defense, and the goalkeeper who tries to prevent the other team from scoring in their goal.

Players get penalized for unfair or rough playing with the use of cards. A “yellow card” is considered a warning, while a “red card” is a flagrant violation, which results in an automatic removal of the player from the game and that player cannot be replaced. A player who receives 2 yellow cards gets the same penalty as a red card, which leaves the player’s team with fewer players. Soccer is considered a non-contact sport and is known to have much less injuries than other sports like football or basketball.
